Interview with ToneyLeClair

April 4, 2018

Who are your influences in the game and in your personal life?

Artistically i was most touched by the legend Eminem’s ability to say whatever the f*** he wanted to and his videos were always deep. On the business side I look up to the Goat Jay Z. Sean Carter’s decisiveness and discipline not only inspire me with my artistry but also in my everyday life. He is a pioneer and continues to stay relevant, he is one of a kind.

If you could compare yourself to an already established artist, whowould that be and why?

I feel i represent artistry, trying to compare myself to another established artist would be like comparing Picasso to Monet, or blue to purple. Tbh anyone who found a way to sustain the craft and add a new shade to the spectrum.

What do you think your listeners will get out of your music?

Listening to my music you will get always gets bars, vibes, and a sense of me.

What were you thinking about when your songs are developed? Explain your process.

Sometimes i just go in the booth and talk to the beat. I find my best tracks come from daily struggles. Its like i get to talk my shit out. I also like to take an instrumental t the crib, put it on repeat, zone out, pen and paper.

What made you want to get into the business?

I am an artist. I had the chance to go to Stanford university, I could be living a lot of other peoples dreams right now but instead I’m following mine. Its not easy but i tried the 9-5 and that was harder knowing i wasn’t pursuing my passion. Shouts out to the dream chasers #freemeek

What is the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in life?

I feel mentally the struggle is all relative. Physically I just recovered from a shattered knee- boneeeeee!!!! That shit hurt. I was playing catching a dunk off the rim and got knocked out the air. The recovery had me on pause when I’m used to being on go. I did get a lot accomplished tho, it helped me focus.

When did you get into HipHop?

I don’t remember a time its always been my comfort zone.

Which Hip Hop Artists would you like to work with?

To many to name. I just want to make new shit and keep creating.

How would you compare UK vs USA rap scene?

In my opinion i feel the US rap scene is more comercialized and theres a lot more pointless gimmicks, but the UK scene is way less developed.
