Interview With itsDee

July 24, 2019

What drew you to the music industry?
In all honesty the first thing that drew me to the industry was the money, i never had money growing up and we all strive for that extra bit of security, my parents did their best and I turned out fine and got everything I ever asked for even if it took its time, and that’s what makes me appreciate the little things so much more. But nowadays music is the only thing keeping me sane, once I delved into music and even took a step deeper into myself i’ve come realise there's so much more to being happy and feeling secure than having some money. Yeah i would love to have money to do what i want and whenever i want but at the same time I could stay broke forever but if I'm doing what I love and making music as and when I feel like it, then I will be content with where I am in my life.

Who are you inspired by?
Man, firstly my daughter brings me so much inspiration, and so do the rest of my family members, everything I do is for my family and their future. My inspirations are crazy, they are all so different it just shouldn’t make sense, Mac Miller is the one person I have and will always look up to, he is the whole reason I picked up courage to release my first ever song, he taught me so much about myself and influences my music on so many different levels, we got OutKast, A Tribe Called Quest, Logic, Rhyme Asylum, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Wu-Tang Clan and the list goes on.
Of course we have Eminem, and Eminem has played/plays a huge roll in my choices to become a rapper, I grew up to my dad bumping eminem in the car on some journeys, hell, he even introduced me to G-Unit, Warren G, Snoop Dogg and the whole lot, and in a way I suppose every artist I ever grew up on has inspired me in some sort of way, whether it's a lot or a little bit they all play a significant role for me, so I guess I really have to thank my dad for where I'm at right now.

Please explain your creative process

What’s an average day like for you?
Usually i will wake up, sit on my phone for an hour or two and search the internet for a beat, put on some headphones and bring out my notepad, I can have beats playing while I'm in the shower and just freestyle until i get the right lyrics then write it down. I’ll spend the rest of my day doing my duties as a dad and enjoying all the time I can with my daughter who inspires me to be a better person every single day. Most of my days consist of doing music, working on it or listening to it. In between juggling music and trying to complete my uni degree, i don't have much else to do with my time, other than work on new music. I never miss an opportunity to work on music because the one time I miss it, could be the only time i needed that opportunity.

Is there a hidden meaning in any of your music?
I wouldn't say a ‘hidden meaning’, but a lot of my music reflects big time on me and where my personal life is at that moment in time, i have happy songs, I have sad songs and I have song where i just want to ‘talk my stuff’ and go in. I hide a lot of emotion into ‘bars’ an ‘punchlines’ to deter people from the sad reality of most of my lyrics.

Do you collaborate with others? What is that process?
I have made a few collabs in which are unreleased, but will be available on my up and coming mixtape! (which will be out in August, so look out for that! and a few that are in the works and waiting to get started on. The process is fairly simple as the people I am collaborating with are people who, not to be big headed, but think highly of me and actually come to me for features. I collaborate with friends on a daily basis i just never end up letting them see the light of day.

Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans
If any fan comments, messages or shares anything of mine I will make sure I go out of my way to reply or thank them in any way possible, I may not have the biggest fan base but all my praises i get do not go unnoticed and it motivates me more and more with each bit of love and support I am shown.

What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? Why?
My favourite part? The fact that I can wake up and do what I love EVERY single day and never get bored, and every day is something different. I never wanted a simple 9-5 just to ‘scrape by’ because I see myself being so much more than that and the fact I can be, is what makes me enjoy this line of work just so much more, I'm free to do what I want when I want to do it and if I'm happy with it but nobody else is then that's fine with me too.
My least favourite thing is definitely the difficulty of getting recognition, getting negativity (comments etc) and the difficulty of it getting to the right ears. There’s a lot to be thankful for in this industry but can be so detrimental to yourself as the longer I go unnoticed the more it plays on my mind and brings on a load of self doubt. No matter how bad it gets though I always will be doing what I love to do. Make it or not.

Have you ever dealt with performance anxiety?
In some ways I could say yes, although I have never actually performed for anyone but a couple of friends, the things stopping me stem from some anxiety I have inside myself, being the main reason I haven't taken it upon myself to visit venues and perform.

Tell me about your favorite performance venues
As I said in the last question I haven't ever performed but i have been to concerts and performances around me locally and my favourite venue has been ‘Slim Rabbit’ in Perth City.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
My only advice would be to stay persistent, no matter how hard things get in your life or even outside of life and in music, turn everything you can into something for other people to relate to, having a bad day? Make a song about it because I can guarantee you that you are not the only person that has bad days. Stick to doing what you love to do, and don't ever let anybody stop you or deter you away from doing it.
